Apple Pie

Apple Pie recipe
Apple Pie is a traditional British food dessert recipe dish.

Preparation Time: 30 mins
Cooking Time: 30 mins (approx)
Serves: 6
Ingredients for pastry:
250g unsalted butter (softened)
120g caster sugar
1 egg (lightly beaten)
pinch of salt
500g plain flour
3 tbsp cold water
Ingredients for apple filling:
700g (1 ½ lbs) cooking apples or Bramley apples (peeled, cored, quartered)
2 tbsp lemon juice
100g (½ cup) sugar
5 tbsp cold water
1 tsp ground cinnamon
25g (¼ stick) butter
Extras: 9 inch pie dish (greased)
Method:
1. Place butter in a mixing bowl.
2. Add the sugar.
3. Mix the butter and caster sugar together.
4. Add the egg.
5. Add the flour and a pinch of salt.
6. Mix it all together with your fingers until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
7. Work in 1-2 tablespoons of cold water (if needed) until the pastry just comes together.
8. Divide it in half.
9. Roll it into 2 balls.
10. Cover both pastry balls in cling film.
11. Place the pastry balls in refrigerator to chill for about 40 minutes.
12. Preheat oven to 200C (400F) or Gas Mark 6.
13. Put the apples in to a large saucepan.
14. Add the lemon juice.
15, Add the water.
16. Heat to a simmer.
17. Cook until the apples are soft.
18. Add the sugar.
19. Add the cinnamon.
20. Remove from the heat.
21. Add the butter.
22. Leave to cool.
23. Take one of the pastry balls out of the refrigerator.
24. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface so it's big enough to line the bottom and sides of a 9 inch pie dish.
25. Trim edge of pastry.
26. Add in the cold cooked apple mixture.
27. Moisten the edge of the pastry with a little water (it will help to seal the two layers of pastry together).
28. Take out the remaining pastry ball from the refrigerator.
29. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface so it's big enough to make a lid for your pie dish.
30. Cover the pie with the pastry lid.
31. Trim off extra pastry.
32. Crimp the pastry edges together.
33. Make up to 4 slits (vents) in the pie crust to allow the steam to escape.
34. Sprinkle over some caster sugar.
35. With any left over pastry trimmings make some pastry leaves to decorate your pie.
36. Put the apple pie into the preheated oven at 200C (400F) or Gas Mark 6.
37. Bake for 30 mins or until the top is golden brown.
38. Remove the pie from the oven.
39. Leave the pie to cool for a few minutes for the filling to settle.
40. Serve it with custard cream or vanilla ice cream.
